A new two-volume set featuring an original translation from the German

The Sep-Dec History book will be ON WAR Volume One by Carl von Clausewitz. This means that the Jan-Apr 2027 History book will be ON WAR Volume Two. The two-volume set will feature a new and original translation by Castalia House, and unlike every English edition of On War since the first 1873 translation of Vom Kriege, the Castalia History edition will contain Die wichtigsten Grundsätze des Kriegführens and Leitfaden zur Bearbeitung der Taktik oder Gefechtslehre, which are two additional works written by Clausewitz on the subject of war, as well as three historically significant letters, Entwurf, Über die organische Eintheilung der Streitkräfte, and Skizze eines Plans zur Taktik oder Gefechtslehre.

Regarding the translation, here is how yesterday’s poll went:

• 53% Howard/Paret 1976

• 34% Castalia House 2026

• 13% Graham/Maude 1908

Howard/Paret is the Princeton University Press edition, which Princeton describes as follows: First published in 1976 and revised in 1984, Michael Howard and Peter Paret’s Princeton edition of Clausewitz’s classic work has itself achieved classic status and is widely regarded as the best translation and standard edition of On War in English.

The Graham/Maude translation is the one with which most Clausewitz readers are familiar, as it is the public domain edition first translated by Colonel J.J. Graham in 1874, then revised by Colonel F.N. Maude C.B. in 1908.

This is a very reasonable and respectable outcome. In what is somewhat of the inverse of the usual situation with regards to academic texts, the Howard/Paret translation stresses readability at the cost of fidelity, so it’s not at all surprising that it was preferred by the majority of Library readers participating in the poll. But the fact that more than one-third of the readers actually preferred our new translation over the Princeton University Press edition shows that it definitely merits being selected for the Castalia History edition instead of the Graham translation.

I thought this comment from a native German speaker comparing the three translations was particularly observant. Note that translation 1 was Graham, translation 2 Castalia, and translation 3 was Howard/Paret.

For me as a German native translation 2 is both the closest to the original and the easiest to read. Translation 1 is second place. Reasonably close to the original text in meaning, syntax and stile but at times it appears as translated one half-sentence at a time, like a low-level student might do it. Also, as far as I can asses it, some words are not translated in their correct meaning, e.g. “unbedeutend” --> unimportant (1) vs. insignificant (2) or “begreiflich” --> intelligible (1) vs. comprehensible (2). Translation 3 is really poor, heavily simplified and lacking precision. Active becomes passive and the other way round. The acting subjects change. Additional specifications appear that do not occur in the original. In some cases, not only the style but also the meaning differs from the original.

The best literal/textual translation. It preserves Clausewitz’s unusual diction and syntax better than the others and is the safest version for someone who wants to stay close to the German. Its principal weakness is that literalness occasionally becomes bad English or even slightly wrong English: “completely efficient factor,” “correct theorist,” “experience of judgment,” “incidents… upon which it was impossible to calculate,” etc.

The best semantic translation and, in my view, the best overall version. It sometimes departs from the German’s exact syntax, but usually does so intelligently. More importantly, when Graham’s literalness produces awkward or misleading English, Castalia frequently gets the underlying meaning right.

A superb adaptation, but not the best translation. Its departures are systematic rather than accidental. It repeatedly:

• and occasionally introduces concepts absent from the German.

The most important conclusion

Graham is not simply “the best translation.” It is the most literal translation. Castalia is more often the best translation of the meaning. I think Castalia comes remarkably close to an ideal compromise. It doesn’t merely make Clausewitz readable; in several crucial places—in Betrachtung kommen, Erscheinungen, Übung des Urteils, Takt, der Geist des Feldherrn—it actually gives a more semantically responsible English rendering than Graham, despite being less mechanically literal. And if the criterion is “Which one would I trust as the basis for a definitive new English edition?”, I would choose CASTALIA, subject to correcting a handful of places where Graham’s literalness reveals something Castalia has smoothed over.
