It really had to be Translation 2. Translation 3 was easiest to read but just not faithful enough to the source material. No. 1 is right out. I voted for 2 but am ultimately quite thankful that my intellectual betters chose Castalia's version.
Agree with GEMINI's assessment that Castalia strikes the ideal balance between absolute accuracy to Clausewitz’s original German syntax and natural, forceful English prose. It captures Clausewitz’s original philosophical metaphors without over-simplifying them. Why put something more palatable to modern readers into leather permanence?
As a semi-regular German speaker & avid reader of German works, Castalia's version gave me that German sense of "Kopfkino" or "bildhaftes Denken". Reading that version gave the strongest feeling of the text creating a superior mental landscape; what in English is termed the Mind's Eye. VERY happy with this choice and looking forward to owning both volumes.
I don't know which translation the Penguin book I tried to read used, but I gave up part way through when I found myself back-translating into German to understand it.

Excellent choice. Thank you.
Love the choice. Translation 3 didn't feel good enough for a leather cover.
Can't wait to read it!
Nice.
