Second Serial: Yes or No?
A subscriber-only poll
So, now that everyone more or less understands what is possible, we’d like to know if there is an interest in a second serial from our set of translations in the works. We’re going to do the translations anyway, but since they’re being supported by the paid subscribers here, it seemed right to make them available here.
The reason we ask is that we previously offered serialization of A THRONE OF BONES in German, and there was virtually zero interest in that, presumably because almost all of our readers are English speakers. So, to be clear, the translations serialized here will be from a foreign language into English.
There are several options, such as making the serial posts paywalled, but in our experience, most people supporting these projects want them to be as broadly accessible as possible. So, let’s start with the obvious question:
Now, please only respond to the second question, and do so in the comments, if you answered the first one in the affirmative:
What translated text would you like the second serial to be? We already have a translation of Natsume Soseki’s KOKORO, we will not serialize GENJI MONOGATARI any time soon, and we are not interested in doing a Bible or any theological work at this time.
Which leaves the entire field of foreign-language literature from which to choose. Our preferences lean toward works that are a) untranslated, b) poorly translated, or c) only have outdated translations available, so if you could provide suggestions from that range of possibilities, it’s more likely to make the list.
In short, there should be a reason for the translation to exist beyond “I really like X by Y, so you should do that.” And for those who struggle with the concept of copyright, please keep in mind that the works to be translated have to be in the public domain, otherwise we do not have the right to translate them. If you are not sure, please check before making the suggestion.
